Terramar Museum is a historical and archaeological museum in the center of Kralendijk, Bonaire. It presents Bonaire’s history and cultural heritage through archaeological and anthropological research, as well as art and education.

In a small notebook, an unknown 19th-century author on the island of St. Martin recorded medical remedies and other useful information. Jean Glasscock explores the island’s transformation over time – geologically, culturally, socially, and politically – tracing its evolution from its earliest formations and Indigenous presence, through colonial encounters, slavery, emancipation, and modern-day governance.

In this book ‘The Monuments of Saba – The Island of Saba a Caribbean example’ the author, architect and lecturer Frans H. Brugman, gives a rather accurate description of the typical traditional Saban architecture. He emphasizes the characteristic red-and-white painted cottages and avails ample information regarding their origin, relation, and development. It is to regret that the future of these small traditional wooden cottages, which were built since the seventeenth century, is at stake. 

The main objective of this research is to explore the nature of ethnic identity amongst the people of Curaçao and to consequently arrive at a deeper understanding of the perceptions, thinking, feeling and behaviour patterns of the island’s people.

‘The Netherlands Antilles’ by C.L.H. Jonckheer is an overview of the political, economic, and social development of the Netherlands Antilles, compiled by one of the key political figures in the region’s mid-20th century history.

‘The Portuguese Immigrant in Curaçao’ is a book by Charles do Rego that explores the immigration, participation, and integration of Portuguese immigrants in Curaçao during the 20th century.

‘The Sephardics of Curaçao’ offers an in-depth study of the Sephardic Jewish community in Curaçao, which has played a significant role in the island’s economic, social, and cultural development since the 17th century. Through anthropological analysis, Frances P. Karner examines the origins of this community, their migration from the Iberian Peninsula, their influence on trade in the Caribbean, and their religious and social traditions.

‘The Story of Papiamentu’ offers a comprehensive historical analysis of Papiamentu, the creole language spoken in Curaçao, Aruba, and Bonaire.

The Vineyard Building is one of Sint Maarten’s Monuments. The area was named after the estate, which probably got its name from the grapes that were cultivated around the house.

In het boek ‘Monument Bonaire’ staan zes verschillende bouwstijlen, over een bouwperiode die loopt tot ongeveer 1970. Een relatief grote groep gebouwen uit die periode past niet in één van deze zes bouwstijlen. Of ze dragen niet meer de kenmerken. Het woord kunuku (Papiaments) kan ook fonetisch geschreven worden als Koenoekoe, knoekoe, of knuku. Voor de ABC-eilanden is het een landelijk gebied buiten de dorpen (oorspronkelijke) woonkernen of woonwijken. In dit artikel uit het Antilliaans Dagblad (13 december 2024) vertelt Wilna Groenenboom over rol van de kunuku op Bonaire. 

Wilna Groeneboom verwijst in haar column in het Antilliaans Dagblad (24 december 2024) naar hoofdstuk dertien uit het boek Monument Bonaire: Monumenten van gisteren, vandaag en morgen. Wilna richt zich vooral op de uitdagingen die gepaard gaan met het behoud van en de zorg voor deze monumenten.

In 2013, Inventarisatie Architectuur Bonaire schrijft Wilna Groeneboom over de website die ze heeft opgezet, op basis van haar onderzoek ‘Inventarisatie van de Bonairiaanse Architectuur’. Op basis van dit onderzoek heeft ze haar boek ‘Monument Bonaire’ gemaakt. Wilna schrijft over de waarde van dit project en de uitdagingen die ze is tegen gekomen om de website toegankelijk te krijgen voor bewoners van Bonaire en geïnteresseerden.
