A community tradition of creativity and celebration

Each December, the neighborhood of San Nicolas on Aruba’s southeastern coast
transforms into a festive landscape known as Cas di Luz – the House of Lights. What
began decades ago as a simple holiday decoration activity has grown into a cherished
local tradition that brings families, neighbors, and visitors together during the Christmas
season.

Origins in community spirit

Cas di Luz has its roots in small, handcrafted displays created by San Nicolas residents.
Over time, these displays evolved into illuminated structures, thematic light installations,
and colorful neighborhood décor. The tradition reflects the creativity and resilience of
the community, where limited resources were transformed into something meaningful,
joyful, and shared.

A festive atmosphere filled with music

Music plays an important role in the Cas di Luz experience. During the holiday weeks,
the streets come alive with gaita, a musical style closely associated with Aruba’s
Christmas season. Visitors often gather to enjoy the performances, creating an
atmosphere of togetherness and celebration. The combination of lights and music
highlights the cultural importance of the holiday period on the island.

A living expression of Aruban heritage

Cas di Luz is more than a seasonal display; it is an example of how Aruban
communities preserve and reinterpret traditions across generations. By transforming
their neighborhood into a shared festive space, residents continue to strengthen
community bonds and express cultural identity through creativity, collaboration, and
celebration.

Visiting Cas di Luz

Cas di Luz typically takes place throughout December in San Nicolas, with displays set
up along neighborhood streets and public areas. Visitors can walk or drive through the
area to enjoy the illuminated structures, musical performances, and the holiday
atmosphere created by the local community.

The opening of Cas di Luz will be on the 6th of december, 7.30 pm at Seroe Preto. Click here to visit the eventpage.
