English – In front of you lies the 8th edition of the brochures published by the Pro Monumento Foundation (ProMo) whenever a Monumento Habrí (Open Monument Day) is organized. As is customary, a very fascinating and especially sensational walking route has been outlined for visitors. A walking route with extensive descriptions of the architecture, the history of the neighborhood, and the buildings purposely opened to the public. For this dr. Fosca Bosch- Kruimel has investigated the archives. She also wrote the text for this brochure. The Monumento Habrí again has a festive nature because this year Willemstad has been ten years on the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
The premises that will be open to the public on the occasion of ‘Monumento Habrí’ (Open Monument Day), for the greater part are situated on the isthmus that in those days connected Willemstad with the rest of the island. Here ‘Pietermaai Smal’ (Narrow Pietermaai) originated in the 18th and 19th centuries. The area in which the houses are opened runs from the Theaterstraat up to and including the Johan van Walbeeckplein.

The book of cures is a small notebook from the 1800s. It was recovered from the remains of Pierre Beauperthuy’s museum in The Old House in St. Martin in late 2017. The house had been unattended for some years following Pierre’s death, and it was badly damaged during Hurricane Irma. Much of Pierre’s collection was still inside The Old House. It had been battered by the winds and rain, left exposed where the roof was torn open. Luckily, the notebook was one of the items that survived. In fact, it has survived many hurricanes since the first entries were written in it, perhaps 200 years ago.
This notebook, written by an unknown 19th-century author on the island of St. Martin with medical remedies and other useful information, provides a unique window into life on St. Martin.
Author Mark Yokoyama dives into the book’s different ‘cures’, from curing the ‘flux’ (dysentery) to recipes for improved rum. As such it provides interesting insight into the daily preoccupations of an 18th-century islander.

The Christoffel National Park is the largest and most biodiverse park on the island. In the park you can find stunning nature, the Christoffel Mountain, beautiful birds, the national white tailed deer and wonderful hiking trails. We offer tours, guided hikes, and seasonal activities. Inside the park you can find the Savonet Museum.
Savonet Museum
The Savonet Museum, which is housed in a 17th-century plantation house, tells you the story of the Savonet Plantation and the adjacent Savonet area. The story begins with the first inhabitants of the area: the Arawak Indians and goes on to the slavery period, the abolishment of slavery, and the independence of Curacao in 2010. The main focus of the museum is the lives of the former slaves and later ‘workers’ of the Savonet Plantation, the lives of the owners, and the interaction between these two groups.
In the Christoffel National Park you can explore:
- Stunning Nature
Nature lovers will find the park teeming with birds and plants. You will probably see species that are not easily seen elsewhere on the island. The park harbors a rich variety of local flora and fauna.
- Hiking & Climbing
An abundance of hiking trails to choose from. A relaxed stroll or a more advanced trail, there is something to do for everyone! Climbing the Christoffel Mountain is one of the most popular – and more advanced – hiking trails in the park.
- Interesting History
Visit the Savonet Museum located in “Landhuis Savonet” inside the Christoffel Park. Get inside information and a peak into the lives of the former inhabitants of the area.
- Safari & Guides
There are many ways to explore the park at your own pace and time, however if you are looking to dig a little deeper into the history, flora and fauna of the park, we recommend you to join us on one of the guided hikes or (jeep safari) tours.
