Stichting Monumentenzorg Curaçao – Curaçao Heritage Foundation – was founded in 1954. The private foundation is the oldest and largest organization in the field of preservation of monuments in the former Netherlands Antilles. She has over the years been a great stimulator for the preservation of the built heritage.
Meanwhile, the foundation has over 120 monuments under management, including town houses, forts, plantation houses and even a former synagogue. Several of these were acquired when they were already in a dilapidated state and threatened to be lost. By now most have been restored.
Stichting Monumentenzorg Curaçao initiated Herens/cia | Erfgoed | Heritage to promote knowledge exchange and improve access to Dutch-Caribbean heritage. In collaboration with partners across all six islands, the platform supports the preservation and accessibility of tangible and intangible heritage through a comprehensive inventory of resources and activities.

Nederlands – De Monumento Habri ’22 (Open Monumentendag ’22) vindt dit jaar plaats in het Stegengebied in Otrobanda. Van oudsher heet dit gebied Rif of Otrobanda Abou. Rif Hgt tussen de Breedestraat en de Pater Euwensweg en verder ruwweg ten oosten van het Sint Elisabeth Hospitaal en westelijk van de oprit naar de Julianabrug, de Arubastraat.
English – Monumento Habri ’22 (Open Monument Day ’22) will take place in Otrobanda’s Reef Area. Reef (Rif) is located between Breedestraat and Pater Euwensweg and roughly east of the (former) St. Elisabeth Hospital and west of the Juliana Bridge ramp, the Arubastraat.

In dit werk heeft Prof. Dr. M.D Ozinga belangrijke monumenten van Curaçao vastgelegd in woord en beeld. Het boek werd gepubliceerd in 1959 en is een van de standaardwerken over gebouwd erfgoed op Curaçao.
De ontstaansreden van dit boek schuilt in de bezorgdheid van een aantal vooraanstaande en vooruitziende bewoners van Curaçao voor het voortbestaan van de monumenten van het eiland, dat wil zeggen van een aanmerkelijk gedeelte van zijn aantrekkelijkheid voor ingezetenen en vreemdelingen. Men wilde tenminste het beeld van de bouwkunst uit het verleden vastleggen, voor zover dit thans nog mogelijk is; ook in de hoop, dat grotere kennis en belangstelling zouden bijdragen tot het behoud van de nog aanwezige waardevolle architectonische elementen.
De informatie uit de jaren ’50 geeft inmiddels een mooi beeld van de voortgang in monumentenbehoud op het eiland.

Experience the historic city on your own by strolling through the town centre with this architectural guide. In it you will find an eastern and a western walking tour, both starting at St. Anna Bay near the Queen Emma pontoon-bridge. The eastern tour will guide you through the oldest part of Willemstad, nowadays called Punda, and through a small part of the Scharloo district. The length of this route is about 21/4 km. The western tour takes you through the Otrobanda district, on the other side of St. Anna Bay. The length of this route is about 2 km.
Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage City
The old city of Willemstad is made up of four quarters: Punda, Scharloo and Pietermaai at the eastern side and Otrobanda at the western side of St. Anna Bay, the deep water channel that divides Willemstad in two halves. About half of the buildings in historic Willemstad were proclaimed protected monuments in the 1990s by the island government. Approximately 750 monuments in a city structure that have not materially changed in the course of three centuries, originally Dutch but during its development influenced by various other cultures make Willemstad a unique city in the Caribbean. This uniqueness was the main consideration of UNESCO that led to placing ‘Historic Willemstad’ on the World Heritage List in December 1997.
