In ”Vrije’ slaven: een sociaal-historische studie over de dualistische slavenemancipatie op Nederlands Sint Maarten, 1816-1863′ onderzoekt A.F. Paula het unieke proces van slavenemancipatie op Sint Maarten in de genoemde periode.
Een kaart van 1859 laat een groot project zien om zout te produceren in de Grote Zoutpan (the Great Salt Pond, St. Maarten, Nederlandse Antillen). Hier is men niet in geslaagd. Toch bleef zoutwinning tot ver in de 20e eeuw een belangrijke industrie, net zoals vroeger het geval was. Tegenwoordig is de Zoutpan gedeeltelijk gebruikt voor de uitbreiding van de stad Philipsburg. Het wordt ook gebruikt als een afvalstortplaats.
