The Wikipedians in residence of ‘Wikipedia on Aruba’ announced on the 25th of September 2025 on their Instagram page that Aruba will once again participate in the global ‘Wiki Loves Monuments’ competition. This photo competition is held globally every year, with 56 countries participating in 2024, yielding over 239,000 unique pictures of monuments worldwide. Aruba has actively participated in the competition every so many years since 2013.
The Wikimedia competition was first organized in the Netherlands in 2010 and has since spread around the globe. In the Dutch Caribbean St. Eustatius has competed before as well, resulting in the publication of the Monumental Moments coffee table book in 2023. In 2017, the Dutch Caribbean islands participated together, although not all islands submitted pictures.
Participating countries first hold a local photo competition. The best pictures of registered monuments per country are then submitted to the global competition. The pictures of monuments on Aruba should be taken and submitted between October 1st and 31st, 2025. The photographers waive their copyright when uploading the pictures on Wikimedia, which means that a database of high-quality pictures of monuments is available for anyone to use, in order to promote awareness around these monuments. This year for the first time, the competition is coordinated in Aruba by “Wiki’s” in residence.
