Scharloo, a quarter of Willemstad already existing in the eighteenth century,\u00a0developed in a magnificent way during the second half of the last century. Many\u00a0Jewish families, who had become the richest in Curacao during those years\u00a0thanks to their commercial activities,\u00a0chose this part of the town to build\u00a0monumental houses in a new style: the\u00a0classicist style. Their luxurious dwellings\u00a0often closely recalled American plantation houses or English or Italian villas, from which they were indirectly copied.<\/p>\n
In these homes the Jews led a particular way of life, marked by a grandeur typical of that group of families called\u00a0hende di\u00a0Scharloo<\/em>, Scharloo people.
