Het afgelegen Caribische eiland Saba wordt liefkozend \u2018de onbedorven koningin\u2019 genoemd, vanwege het onaangetaste karakter van haar natuurlijke omgeving. Vier eeuwen geleden vestigden Europese kolonisten uit Zeeland (Nederland) en de Britse Eilanden zich op het eiland en veranderden het gedeeltelijk in een cultuurlandschap met een opvallend karakter en een inheemse architectuur die het waard is om goed beschermd te worden.
\nDe inwoners \u2013 nog steeds niet meer dan 2000 \u2013 moesten zich aanpassen aan het ruige en bergachtige landschap. Dit komt tot uiting in de ligging van de dorpen, het netwerk van paden en trappen die hen met elkaar verbinden, de bouw en grootte van de houten huisjes, evenals de regenwaterreservoirs en begraafplaatsen op hun percelen. Deze combinatie maakt Saba uniek in de Caribische regio. De Sabaanse architectuur, die zijn oorsprong vindt in de Victoriaans-Britse bouwtraditie, is door de jaren heen nauwelijks veranderd, al vormt de opkomst van betonbouw tegenwoordig een serieuze bedreiging.<\/p>\n
In dit artikel verkennen we hoe Europese kolonisten zich op het eiland vestigden en hoe dit heeft geresulteerd in een geheel eigen erfgoed en een bijzonder waardevol cultuurlandschap.<\/p>\n

The isolated Caribbean island of Saba is affectionately called \u2018the unspoiled Queen\u2019, due to the unaffected character of its natural environment. European colonists from Zeeland (The Netherlands) and the British Isles occupied the island four centuries ago and partially changed it into a cultural landscape with an outstanding character and a vernacular architecture that is worth to be well protected.
\nThe inhabitants \u2013 still no more than 2000 \u2013 had to adjust to the rugged and mountainous landscape. This is expressed by the location of the villages, the network of paths and stairs connecting them, the construction and size of the wooden cottages and the cisterns and burial sites on their properties. This combination makes Saba unique in the Caribbean region. The Saban architecture which is rooted in a Victorian-British building tradition, has hardly changed over the years, though building in concrete is a serious threat nowadays.<\/p>\n
In this article, we explore how European colonists settled on the island and how this resulted in a unique heritage and a particularly valuable cultural landscape.<\/p>\n
